Three Greatest Moments In Large Bedside Cot History

Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also called co-sleepers or bassinets) are designed to let parents snuggle with their infant at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months, after which your baby will be ready to move to an actual bed.

MFM home tester Mehack loved the fact that this model features a bassinet that can be lifted off to use in the home and the ability to rock manually. It was also simple to put together and came with its own travel bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots and cots differ in terms of size in size, with cots smaller than cot beds. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used for children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - large and standard that can be transformed into a toddler bed or a cot. The larger one is a good idea for children who want to sleep in it until the age of +/- three.

MFM mom home tester Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was slightly larger than the Moses basket, but not too large for her baby's room. Jasmine says it's easy to lift the baby in and out of the cot during night feeds or for soothing, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are cheap and flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways it's a drop-off bassinet that can be moved around the house, and it rocks too.  rocking bedside crib  has an option to tilt the reflux upwards and a machine-washable liner that breathes. And it was shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib, or Moses Basket. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means you don't need to buy a brand new mattress when your baby grows. It will require a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.

Height

When selecting a cot for the bed be sure to choose one that can be elevated to a height that is comfortable for you when feeding baby. It must also be lowered out of the way, so you can lift up your child towards you to feed them at night or comfort him. This is particularly useful if you are recovering from a C Section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to the height of 58cm. the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

Another thing to consider is the height you would like to set for the base of your cot to be. Some mothers find it is easier to lift their babies from standard Moses baskets when the base is at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher elevation to give them more stability. One of our testers for mums mentioned that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It is a collapsible side you can press at the press of one button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device is only suitable when your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is usually around 6 months. This is due to the risk of suffocation. It is also important to be aware that if your child is old enough to turn the bedside sleeper into a cot, you will need to remove the sides as soon as they are able to do this. This will prevent them from getting out or falling out of the bed.

Design

There are a variety of bedside crib with a range of styles from simple to lavish. Some of the most luxurious options include features such as a built-in light, a soothing center that plays music and sound and comes with two levels to help soothe your baby back to sleep. Another option is the swivelling footrest, which makes it easier for you to reach your child when you need to feed them. You can also find models which can be made into the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to transition to a larger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air for instance, won Bronze at the 2021 Mother and Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It features a swivelling bottom that lets you take your baby to the crib and transfer them to the other side of the crib without getting out of bed. This is perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesareans or those who have to remain in bed for extended periods. Jasmine, a MFM mother who tested the product at home, said it was easy to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after a c-section.

Chicco Next2me Magic is another option. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards to be the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's a bit bigger than some of the other cribs for bed we've looked at, but it folds flat in its bag for travel, so it's quite compact when not in use.

Leya, MFM mum home tester also appreciated the bedside crib's function. She said it was designed to be used by parents and children. 'It has an excellent design that is extremely maneuverable and is extremely durable. Its swivelling base is fantastic because it allows you to move the bassinet side to side and one of its sides can be let down to ease access especially for mothers who are recovering from C-sections,' she added.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems that included gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents) as well as consumer misassembly, or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR, the CPSC examined the possibility of imposing additional requirements for bedside sleepers, like the requirement that these beds meet the minimum side height requirement for bassinets or at a minimum, meet the maximum height requirement for the lowered side rail. However, the CPSC found that these requirements are not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents where infants were trapped between the bedside sleeper and an adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that can be converted to other modes such as bassinets and play yards. Several commenters suggested the CPSC add an alternative provision to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. This attachment can be permanently connected or removed when the product is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is currently reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will take into account these comments when voting on the final rule that is expected to be released in November 2021.
